Remarks: TSH (Thyrotropin Hormone) is used for the investigation of hypothyroidism (increased TSH levels) and for the differential diagnosis of primary hypothyroidism from pituitary/hypothalamic hypothyroidism. Decreased TSH occurs both in hyperthyroidism or when excessive therapeutic thyroid replacement occurs.Unsuspected increase in TSH levels is may occur in elderly subjects. High TSH levels may occur in certain patients with thyrotropin-secreting pituitary adenomas.
