Sodium

Sample: Serum 0.5 mL

Status: Accredited

Schedule: Daily

Units: mEq/L

Range: 135 - 155

Remarks: Low sodium serum levels are associated with nephrotic syndrome, cachexia, hypoproteinemia, congestive heart failure or renal failure (renal sodium loss). High sodium (Na) serum values may indicate dehydration. Hypernatremia without obvious cause may be related to diabetes insipidus with insufficient fluids, aldosteronism, and other disorders. Markely high sodium serum levels are associated with volume contraction, lactic acidosis, azotemia (high blood BUN), intense weight loss, and dehydration.
