Remarks: Selenium is a component on glutation peroxidase wich, like Vitamin E, protects against peroxidative damage of of membrane lipids.
Selenium deficiency is presented as a congestive cardiomyopathy, mainly in children and young women. In adult men is presented mainly as skeletal myopathy.
The syndrome includes painful weak muscles, congestive heart failure due to cardiomyopathy. Selenium toxicity may occur with industrial exposure.
