Homocysteine

Sample: Serum (Frozen)

Schedule: Daily

Units: umol/mL

Range: 5,0 - 15,0

Remarks:

Homocysteine is used in screening patients at risk for heart disease; it is an Independent Risk Factor for the development of Cardiovascular Disease. High Homocysteine serum levels may be caused by mutation in the MTHFR gene that leads to reduced activity in the enzyme involved in the Homocysteine metabolism. Patients with cardiovascular disease usually have high Homocysteine levels in serum. Patients with stroke, peripheral vascular disease and thromboembolic disease also have increased Homocysteine levels in blood. On the other hand, hyperhomocysteinemia is associated with high risk for fetal neural tube defects and recurrent abortion, placental abruption and pregnancy-related vascular disorders.
