FSH (Folicle Stimulating Hormone)

Sample: Serum

Schedule: Daily

Units: mIU/mL

Range: (See table below)

Remarks: Markedly high serum FSH and LH levels are found in hypogonadism, anorchia, gonadal failure, testicular feminization syndrome, menopause, alcoholism, castration. FSH and LH are useful to distinguish primary gonadal failure from secondary (hypothalamic/pituitary) causes of gonadal disease, menstrual disturbances and amenorrhea. FSH and LH are useful in defining menstrual cycle phases in infertility evaluation of women and testicular dysfunction in men. Both FSH and LH levels are high following menopause. High LH/FSH ratio (> 1.5) is found in the polycystic ovary syndrome.
