Androstenedione (D4)

Sample: Serum or EDTA, heparin plasma. See Instructions here

Schedule: Wednesday and Friday

Units: ng/mL Convertion ng/mL x 3.4916 = nmol/L

Range: It exhibits diurnal variations, being highest in the morning 0,8 - 2,8 ng/mL Males 0,4 - 2,7 ng/mL Females

Remarks: Androstenedione is a steroid which serves as a major precursor for Testosterone and estrogens. Androstenedione is increased in cases of abnormal hair growth (hirsutism) and virilization. Unlike the adrenal androgens dehydroepiandrosterone and its sulfate (DHEA-S), circulating androstenedione originates both from the adrenals and from the ovaries.

Plasma levels increase steadily from about the seventh year of life, then gradually decline after the third decade. Androstenedione exhibits a diumal variation, being highest in the moming, and also a cyclical varialion durring the menstrual cycle, being highest near midcycle. During pregnancy, there is an increase in the plasma level.
