Remarks: Most of the dietary Phosphorous in absorbed from intestines and about 90 per cent of blood phosphate is filtrated by the glomeruli and 85 per cent of this is reabsorbed. Parathyroid homone (PTH) inhibits the reabsobtion in renal tubules. High serum phosphate levels are seen in decreased glomerular filtration or in increased absortion by renal tubules. High phosphate levels are common in growing children. Low phosphate levels are seen in hyperparathyroidism and other causes of hypercalcaemia. Other cause of low phosphate levels id Vitamin D deficiency (osteomalacia).
