Remarks: Hirsutism (Hypertrychosis) is the excessive growth of thick dark hair in androgen-stimulated locations, such as the face, chest, and areolae (hypertrichosis actually refers to excess hair in areas that are not predominantly androgen dependent). Hirsutism may be a manifestation of a more serious underlying disorder such as an ovarian or adrenal neoplasm. Serum Free Testosterone (the androgen that causes hair growth) is regulated by the Sex Hormone Binding Globulin (SHBG): the lower the SHBG the higher the Free Testosterone.
